Form, Light, and the Human Figure:
This drawing workshop is for students wishing to develop an understanding of the classical tradition of figure drawing. The human figure is an infinitely rich subject. It has been said that "If you can learn to draw and paint the figure, you can draw and paint anything."  For centuries artists have trained themselves by studying the complex form of the body, and its associated pattern of light and shade. Participants in this five-day workshop will be introduced to a refined, articulate drawing style. The focus will be on patience, craft, observation, and understanding of drawing principles. Students will learn a practical drawing method that serves as a framework in which to study the elements of drawing. Drawings are built up methodically through a succession of linear and tonal stages.  Each stage in particular embodies and exemplifies one or more universal aesthetic principle: wholeness, simplicity, connection, fluidity, dynamism, volume, structure, organization, and finally the phenomenon of visual experience itself.

Tony Ryder is an able and energetic instructor with nearly forty years experience teaching drawing from life.  His unique instructional style combines careful personal attention to each student with abundant class drawing demonstrations.  He is generous with information and supportive of the students.  He loves to draw and at the same time explain the process of drawing to his students.  He studied for six years in New York and in France with the renowned oil painter Ted Seth Jacobs.  He has taught classes at the Art Student's League of New York, the New York Academy of Figurative Art, and workshops at the Gage Academy of Art, Studio Incaminati and other schools in the United States and France.  His book The Artist's Complete Guide to Figure Drawing, published by Watson-Guptill, was released in 2000 and has since sold over 75,000 copies.  His paintings and drawings are in many private collections.  If you wish to see his work on line, please visit www.tonyryder.com.

Non-symbolic painting, also known as form painting, represents what we actually see with our eyes, not substituting ideograms, like present day ‘emojis’. In learning to paint non-symbolically we develop an understanding of the building blocks of visual experience: form and the light by means of which we see this form.

Through the practice of non-symbolic painting we become aware that, in all of nature generally, and in the human figure and portrait particularly, there is a specific kind of formal structure. Among traditionally trained painters this formal structure has been known for centuries. We who practice non-symbolic painting from life study this knowledge.

Form painting is a way of painting that is one with this understanding of form and light. It is a methodical way of processing and representing our perception of the appearance of the model. Through the agency of light, a great quantity of information radiates from the model. In form painting we learn how to format and sequentialize this information and bring it into our paintings one brushstroke at a time.

In this figure painting workshop Tony demonstrates form painting on a toned ground, beginning with a medium-value ochre brush drawing. He demonstrates the block-in and the refinement of the drawing. He shows and explains how he sees, mixes and applies colors. He explains and demonstrates the logic of the method of painting from dark to light. He describes in great detail the forms of the body, their fluid shapes, convex surfaces and how they fit together. He shows how he builds the painting from the drawing up, painting each form from dark to light, unified by the perception of the organization of the form and the coherent action of the light.
