Workshop at BACAA and Stanford University

Offered at BACAA Studio & Stanford University Clinical Anatomy Division Lab

Successfully Offered in December 2013, January 2014, August 2014 & 2015.

This course is being offered in accordance with an ongoing relationship between BACAA & Stanford University, specifically, Stanford’s Laboratory of Clinical Anatomy.  The purpose is to offer motivated students of figurative art an intensive program of long posed life drawing, coupled with studies from dissected human cadavers and partial specimens. The course will start with a slide discussion on the trunk (part 1) and then a drawing demonstration and an overview of landmarks of the human figure (intended to cover life drawing fundamentals and initiate a discourse on the use of anatomy in drawing). The afternoon of the first session will be held (as all afternoons will be) at Stanford University. The focus of the afternoon will be on the anatomical appearance of landmarks in prosections (dissected and preserved human parts) as well as planes of motion in the body and how to draw from the cadaver. The second session will begin with a slide discussion on the trunk (part 2) and be followed by life drawing and an afternoon at Stanford’s laboratory, involving interpretations of the torso and human shoulder structure.  The third session will deal with the anatomical arm, beginning with a slide talk and continuing with life drawing and laboratory study.  Session four will introduce the region of the human forearm as a form of aesthetic interest and include a slide discussion, life drawing and laboratory work.  The final session will bring the human hand into focus, first through slides, then figure drawing and, finally, by utilizing the cadaver.  Learning outcomes should include a profound appreciation of the intricacies and beauty of the upper figure.
