Michael Grimaldi and Juliette Aristides
10 Day Structure and Anatomy Drawing
10 Day Painting and Drawing from the figure
Offered as one month  during the month of August Master Program.

These consecutive courses will sequentially present fundamental and advanced concepts of visual perception and their application to composing drawings from direct observation. A thorough understanding of the visual experience and of the
human figure is essential for anyone wishing to express and translate these elements to the picture plane. Separating the
concepts, studying them independently, re-constructing and combining them with the other elements to create well unified
and holistic drawings, will foster the student’s ability to perceive the visual experience with intelligence, apply this
knowledge to their work, and cultivate a strategic approach towards working from life.
Working a 5 day pose, students will explore the elements of proportion, gesture, perspective, likeness, movement, constructive anatomy and morphology, light on form, value construction and composition through sustained investigations of the human figure. These consecutive courses will sequentially present fundamental and advanced concepts of visual perception and their application to composing drawings from direct observation. Scheduled July 9-27th (Part of 4 month master program)

July 9- Aug 3, 2012
1 month summer program
Drawing and Painting from the figure
Offered during 4 month Master Program

Drawing is the foundation of all successful representational life painting. The goal of this workshop is to lay a foundation and clear methodology for both drawing and painting the human figure from life. The four-week intensive workshop will be dedicated to a thorough program of life drawing and painting from the human figure.  One week will be devoted to the head (and its features); and one week to the figure as a preparation subsequent two-week life figure painting.  There will be lectures and demonstrations for each morning session to review clear objectives that will be set forth during the day. As drawing exercises, we will analyze the head and figures gesture, proportion, shape, and structure, for the successful outcome of modeling form.  Several sessions will be dedicated to short poses. This is to reinforce the importance of gaining more control of our drawing by learning to not only draw what we see, but to draw what we know.

In the figure Painting aspect of the workshop we will begin by studying basic color theory by reviewing the color wheel and how it applies to the human figure. A palette will then be set up to give the student a solid basis for their color mixing. Lectures and demonstrations will be given on light, form, color, direct and indirect painting. The students will transfer (or refer to) the life drawing study from the second week as a basis for their subsequent life painting.  This will maximize their ability to concentrate on the modeling of form through hue, value and chroma.

1 month summer program Drawing and Painting from the figure. Offered during 4 month Master Program

Figure Painting Workshop

Using traditional methods and approaches to painting this workshop will provide an intensive look at representing the human form in an accurate and informed fashion. Students will begin with a drawing using the block-in method in which the shapes and masses that comprise the human form are laid out. Emphasis will be placed on proportion and accuracy. Discussions about anatomy, structure, and gesture will also help to bring an integrated and informed eye to representing the model. The drawing will then be transferred to canvas for painting. Once this stage is completed the painting will begin. Ideas such as conceptual modeling, form, and light will be discussed in depth wits to how they are applied in paint. Special care will be given to understanding the color palette and the mixing of “flesh tones”. These ideas will be put into practice as the body is rendered incrementally until a final painting is completed.

Patricia Watwood

March 12-16, 2012

 Taught 2011

Featured on Star Wars Visions book 2010

This workshop will help students use drapery, color, and props to create a beautiful design with the figure.  Good design and composition are the key to adding narrative, creating meaning, and drawing a viewer in to your painting.  Students will learn several different sketching techniques to prepare a design, and learn compositional tips to make beautiful arrangements that express your creative intention on the canvas.  Students will also learn about Watwood’s palette and color mixing for creating naturalistic, luminous and rich skin tones.  Students will begin the week with some quick studies to explore design, and the last 3 days will be devoted to developing one larger piece.  Students will learn a “road map” for constructing a painting from idea to completion.  Learn how to combine painting from life with the reach of your imagination, and learn the steps to make any composition you can dream up.  Students will also learn about Watwood’s palette and color mixing for creating naturalistic, luminous and rich skin tones.   There will be daily demonstrations and lectures, and 4-5 hours of painting time from the model each day, with individual critiques and instruction.

Ryan Wurmser Figurative Intensive-Concept and Composition-New

Figure Painting

10 Day Figure Painting Workshop.

May 7-18th, 2012

Ryan Wurmser Blog

Over the next two weeks the human figure will be our inspiration as we move through various Principles and Elements of DESIGN & COMPOSITION. Learning to see abstractly and conceptually, we will explore Compositional Structures and Modes of Presentation in order to arrive at something principled and artistically inspired. There will be one long pose (10 days) over two weeks. Art challenges our PERCEPTIONS. In this course I will introduce artistic possibilities, visually and conceptually. It all begins with the Painter as designer. DESIGN is the theory and strategy behind visual creation. CONCEPT is a product of the imaginative or inventive faculty of the mind. All concepts are abstractions. ABSTRACTIONS are imbedded in the reality of what we SEE. You must have a concept to have a strategy. This is why I am fond of saying that CONCEPT comes before COMPOSITION. COMPOSITION is the practice and implementation of organizational strategies that lead to a balanced and unified whole. The PRINCIPLES OF DESIGN are laws or basic truths. Recognizing and being able to manipulate these Principles, the painter becomes a SEER. Seeing is the perception of action. ACTION is the interplay of VISUAL ELEMENTS and PRINCIPLE is the glue. As we experiment with possibilities, wonderful insights begin to take hold.

10 Day Clothed Potrait Painting

The purpose of training is about matter of the oil portraits painting making. And should be involve the idea, composition, drawing, colors etc. of the progress under cover by regularity of visual sense in may be different concept deal with the knowledge and experience of the principle of modeling. The technique of the artwork, about capability of material and brush working in which should be touch cross many effect of individual masters like and to find the style “Mr. right” to ourselves with appreciations of discovery.

Course Description

In general, the two weeks portrait workshop with clothing model, instructor will progress “Full Time Dome” during lessons assisting students. That is not mean to making follower of the teacher, but the mean of individual rote to each one. Demo just the artist paint together with artists.

The class will begin with a demonstration that addresses composition and initial decisions needed to begin a painting. The model will take one posture over the duration of the class. Teacher will divide his time between painting from the model alongside students and giving individual critiques. Students are encouraged to spend time each day observing the instructor’s painting process and asking questions.

After resolving composition issues such as the balance of negative space, teacher initially lays in the painting quickly with loose brushstrokes and sketchy, vibrant color.  As the painting develops, teacher refines the detail and color subtleties, using a specific logic observation for temperature sense of the comparison, to check in with warm and cool colors in the lighting situation. And distinguish color changes by prints mixing in absolute different between lights area including halftones, and dark area including shadows.

In concept observation to form, teacher will emphasize as always on invisible exist geometry base under surface, and shape changing goes with force foreshorten in perspective both interior and exterior space.

Follow the steps up, we approaches color mixing by determining whether a color is warm, cool, light, or dark, in to the other colors, following their upon the turning of the form. As used to say, the turning will never stopped.

In the stages development of the painting, the “turn-corner”, as the key point should be noted. This is the philosophy of the examination to painting, help artist to be find, to be build up as It’s not just about details, shapes, color transition as many. It is about “big view” of the structure with entire painting in order to keeps, as a conductor guiding his orchestra.

David Kassan Portrait Painting 2013

10-Day Painting Workshop
class summary

The focus of this course will be on life painting methods to investigate the underlying rhythm, expression and emotion of the modern portrait. We will explore oil on canvass with one pose for the entire time so that we can patiently observe and record our findings. All observation will be cumulative and used towards finishing the final work. Instruction will include discussion of practical technical information on the use of charcoal and white chalk, the properties of light on form and how the topography/depth of the face’s form can be visualized and represented. Most importantly, students will learn to transcend the materials so that their full concentration is placed on expressing the model’s presence and emotion. My goal is to give this class a sense of community, where anything art related can be discussed (books, galleries, artists, techniques), debated, enlightened and experienced.

Following his initial drawing studies at University of the Arts in Philadelphia, David attended Syracuse University in New York, where he studied under the auspices of Jerome Witkin, learning a complete painter should have a strong grasp of the picture making process and a well thought out concept behind a painting. While earning his BFA, he was able to take advantage of the school’s exceptional Art History Department, and on completion of his degree, moved to Brooklyn to continue his studies at The National Academy of Design and the Art Students League of New York, where he had the good fortune to study with a number of artists whom he respects, including: Aaron Shikler, Robert Dacey, Sarah McCoubrey, Mary Beth Mackenzie, David Levine, William Behnkin, Harvey Dinnerstein, Burton Silverman, Steven Assael, and Costa Vavagiakis.

Exhibitions include:  The United Nations in New York, Gallery Henoch, The Park Avenue Armory, The National Academy of Design Museum of Fine Art, Gallery 1199, The Cork Gallery, Lincoln Center, and The Salmagundi Club and nationally at the Mobile Museum of Art, AL, Art Chicago, The San Francisco International Art Exposition, Los Angeles Art Show, The Museum of American Illustration, Huntington House Museum, and The Wethersfield Museum.
