Figure and Portrait Structural Drawing
The human figure has onc again become the main motif in visual art. With
this renewal of interest artists are scrambling to find the required skills
to work with this ultimate subject. This class is a step by step analysis of
the forms of the figure. It will be structured in a manner that will allow
the artist to retain the information in a method that he or she can use.
The medium for the class will be charcoal as it is the most malleable and
quick. We will be doing analytical studies of the forms which will proceed
to more finished renderings. Thus the students work will take on a look of
forms under the skin rather than being empty and lifeless.
We will start by examining the figure as a unit and seeing the large forms
and their interlocking patterns. We will examine the characteristics of
these forms and their visual patterning.Contraposto, movement and rhythmic
lines will also be covered. After this we will examine the parts of the
figure seperately to get to the smaller forms in detail.
The outcome of all of this is that the student should have a solid idea of
the character of the shapes they are looking at from the largest to the
detail forms. When one draws the model the visual information is filtered
through the brain where this "secret figure" or map of the figure informs
the artist what is important and what is not. It is a visual map of the
human figure for the artist.
