Dan Thompson

Long Pose Figure Drawing

Taught at BACAA summer 07 & summer of 08
Is returning to teach in fall 2009

Don't miss this opportunity to study with an internationally known artist. Dan is an incredible artist and amazing colorist.

"Dan's knowledge is so vast and thorough that it would be hard to pin any one subject down. He is an inspiring teacher and his knowledge of structural anatomy and the application to visual/optical drawing is awesome (not a day goes by that I don't feel like I've learned something, by proxy, from him via one of our shared students). He is also a brilliant color theorist and would be terrific for a painting workshop as well as drawing." - Michael Grimaldi Artist instructor Director Janus

Dan Thompson was born in Alexandria, Virginia, and graduated from the Corcoran School of Art in Washington, DC. He earned his MFA from the Graduate School of Figurative Art of the New York Academy of Art, and supplemented his training with several additional years of private study and studio apprenticeships along the east coast of the United States. In 2001, Thompson won Best of Show in the American Society of Portrait Artist’s International Portrait Competition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.

Syllabus

In order to first establish a dialog between instructor and student, this 5 day course is divided into phases or subtopics for the first three days. Thereafter, a long pose under natural light is set for all day sessions. This enables beginners to begin and restart as often as they wish, while more advanced painters refine their studies.

One should anticipate the ongoing discussion drawing from life to be heavily based upon a professional strategy (prioritizing the approach). For example, on the first day an early theme will be seizing the energy and character of the model's pose, to be followed by a strong push toward perceptual drawing. A quest to redefine proportion (and how to impose it) while discovering engaging patterns of light and dark within a rectangle should greatly assist the contemporary in discovering fundamental design elements. These initial concerns effectively set the stage for more intermediate and advanced concepts, such as structure, the focus of which will make up the majority of the course. A figure demonstration is planned within the workshop. One on one discussions, as well as studio talks and critical feedback of each participant's work, will simultaneously take place.
