WORKSHOPS > Jane Paul Angelhart: September 22 - 26, 2008

Watercolors were once thought of as a sketch or study medium for subsequent oil paintings. With lightfast professional pigments, ph balanced papers, and archival framing techniques, watercolors have the potential to outlast oil paintings and are fast becoming the medium of choice.

The goal of this workshop is to build confidence in a variety of watercolor techniques and learn to paint people using photographs as a tool, not a crutch. Students will be guided to see beyond what the camera captures and understand the limits and capacities of painting from photos.

Beginners to accomplished artists will learn exercises to hone the fundamental skills necessary to master this fascinating medium. Following a two-hour demo of a child's portrait, the class will paint the same face with careful guidance, dashing all fears that the face is hard to paint. This exercise will demonstrate the wide variety of styles among the class members and launch individual students on a discovery of untapped options in painting.

Individual coaching will include developing composition using multiple photos; layering techniques; paper, brush, and pigment choices; salvaging disasters; palette arrangement and color choices to prevent muddiness; and using a computer as a tool. Technically, there will be discussion about using transparency, staining and granulating colors. There will be a hands-on photo shoot included to teach students how to position, engage, and photograph a child. Students are invited to bring digital cameras and laptops.

"I thoroughly enjoyed this class. It revitalized my spirit and passion for art. Our instructor is not only a gifted artist but a wonderful teacher-with a unique ability to convey information ... verbally, demonstratively and encouragingly." - Pat Hale
